ATCHISON, Kan. (AFX) - Wheat processor MGP Ingredients Inc. on Wednesday said fiscal fourth-quarter profit surged on sharply higher sales in its distillery business.
For the quarter ended June 30, net income ballooned to $7.4 million, or 43 cents per share, from $732,000, or 4 cents per share, in the prior-year period. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial projected per-share earnings of 46 cents.
Sales rose 22 percent to $90.3 million from $73.9 million a year ago.
MGP said distillery products led revenue growth due to higher fuel-grade alcohol prices and volume, with sales up 51 percent to $24.3 million in the segment. Sales in its ingredients business offset those gains, dropping nearly 30 percent to $18.7 million.
'Our earnings growth for the entire year was driven by our distillery products segment, where the fundamentals remain solid,' said Ladd Seaberg, president and chief executive in a statement.
Profit for the full year totaled $14 million, or 83 cents per share, compared with $4 million, or 24 cents per share, in the prior year. Annual sales in fiscal 2006 grew to $322.5 million, up 17 percent from $275.2 million in 2005.
'Current high demand for both food-grade and fuel-grade alcohol products should support continued strength in our distillery segment,' Seaberg said. However, the company is 'reviewing the entire operation' of its ingredients business.
Shares of MGP rose 30 cents to $19.25 in premarket trading on the INET eletronic exchange after closing at $18.95 Tuesday on the Nasdaq.
