Pfizer's suit vs. generic makers wins court backing - UPDATE 1
22.11.2005 23:11:29, AFX Europe Focus
BOSTON (AFX) -- A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld an injunction
preventing the marketing of a generic version of Pfizer's blood-pressure drug
Accupril, also known as quinapril.
Pfizer won the backing of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
in Washington. The decision upholds a preliminary injunction that barred Ranbaxy
Laboratories and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries from selling their generic
version of quinapril, pending the outcome on an ongoing patent suit.
Pfizer has sued India-based Ranbaxy and Teva, headquartered in Israel, for
patent infringement and damages due to lost sales of the drug. Ranbaxy and Teva
launched their version of quinapril in December 2004. Other generic versions of
the drug remain on the market.
Accupril had 2004 sales of $387 million.
Shares of Pfizer closed down 36 cents, or 1.7% at $21.38.
