Von Gold Fields:
Ian Cockerill: CEO, Gold Fields
By: Chris Buchanan
Posted: '24-OCT-06 09:15' GMT © Mineweb 1997-2006
MINEWEB: Well, we€™re looking at offshore, going offshore and to the global market. We€™ve got Ian Cockerill in the studio. He€™s the CEO of Gold Fields, and Gold Fields is looking at Dubai for a listing. What makes Dubai attractive as a market, Ian?
IAN COCKERILL: Good evening, Chris. For some time we have been looking at increasing the number of markets where Gold Fields can be traded, with a view to perhaps selling full 24-hour-a-day tradability of the stock. Increased tradability certainly does wonders for your stock, and it€™s good for investors to be able to get in and out and particularly out of your stock, if they want to, fairly easily. It makes if much more attractive. We have reviewed several exchanges in the Far East as well as the Middle East, and on the back of our New York regulatory filings for the NYSE, we found it relatively straightforward to move on to the Dubai Stock Exchange. And, interestingly enough, this gives us access to a very large pool of liquidity in what is clearly a very big emerging capital market for the Middle East, as well as for the Indian sub-continent as well. So that€™s the real reason why we decided to do this.
MINEWEB: But they seem to be very aggressive just looking at their website today, they seem very, very keen to get a lot of investors in there. Now are there any other major resource players on what they call the DIFX, bearing in mind it€™s only a year old this exchange?
IAN COCKERILL: Yes, it is only a year old, and as things stand at the moment, there is a limited number of players. I believe there is a hotel company, there is a pharmaceutical company, there€™s an Indian trading house which is on there, so it is early days for the exchange. But I would suspect that it€™s likely to grow. I mean, certainly the ruler Sheikh Maktoum is certainly looking to make Dubai a financial hub of the Middle East, and it€™s going to start off small but we think it will grow in importance.
MINEWEB: Right, now do you have any specific ventures that you are wanting to finance through this listing or are you just, as you said earlier, just wanting to have 24-hour tradability?
IAN COCKERILL: The purpose of this is not to have a concurrent capital rating. It is really to increase brand awareness in the region. We currently have about 1% of our share register which is based in that part of the world, and we would like to increase that. We think that by having the ability to trade our stock on that particular stock exchange, we are likely to attract more people from the region who feel perhaps more comfortable trading on their home stock exchange rather than, say, trading in London, New York or even Johannesburg.
MINEWEB: Have you worked out an offering yet, have you worked out the structure of your capital in Dubai how you will structure it?
IAN COCKERILL: No, it is really just opening up the tradability. There is a market maker who will be there, he will strike bargains and he will match the potential buyers, and he will acquire shares from existing exchanges and that€™s the way it€™s going to work. So it is not a capital-raising as such.
MINEWEB: OK, so he will basically just be trading on behalf in Dubai?
IAN COCKERILL: Absolutely.
MINEWEB: I mean, in terms of, one doesn€™t equate Dubai and resources apart from oil, obviously, but in terms of other mining resources, Dubai doesn€™t strike it. What were your other options I mean, did you have other options in terms of the Far East? What else did you look at?
IAN COCKERILL: Well just firstly to get back, I mean it is called the City of Gold. Now these people in that part of the world are tremendously aurophilic, and it got one of the highest per capita consumptions of gold in the world. So the ability to trade a pure gold stock is very, very attractive. But in terms of the other exchanges that we looked at, it€™s the usual suspects in the Far East it€™s Singapore, it€™s Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Australia. And whilst we haven€™t completely eliminated the possibility of listing on perhaps another one of those exchanges, this seemed to be at this stage the most favourable.
MINEWEB: That€™s Ian Cockerill, he€™s the CEO of Gold Fields, looking at a listing in Dubai.

Gold Fields Limited: R2 Billion (US$280 Million) Operating Profit and R698 Million (US$98 Million) Net Earnings Generated for the Quarter
Thursday October 26, 3:27 am ET
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, October 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gold Fields Limited (NYSE: GFI; JSE: GFI) today announced net earnings for the September 2006 quarter of R698 million compared with R618 million in the June 2006 quarter and R64 million for the September quarter of 2005. In US dollar terms net earnings for the September 2006 quarter were US$98 million compared with US$97 million in the June 2006 quarter and US$10 million for the September quarter of 2005. Net earnings excluding gains and losses on financial instruments and foreign debt net of cash and exceptional items were R702 million (US$99 million) for the September 2006 quarter compared with R550 million (US$86 million) for the June 2006 quarter, an increase of 28 per cent.
ADVERTISEMENT
September 2006 quarter highlights:
- Attributable gold production decreased marginally to just over one million ounces;
- Ore Reserve Development (ORD) costs, previously included in operating costs at the South African operations, are now being capitalised and amortised;
- Total cash costs US$350 per ounce (June quarter - US$345 per ounce restated);
- Net earnings of R698 million (US$98 million), increase for the fifth consecutive quarter;
- National power shortages in Ghana being managed at Tarkwa and Damang;
- Growth projects at Driefontein (9 shaft extension) and Kloof (KEA) commence;
- Gold Fields to acquire 50 per cent of South Deep from Barrick, increase Western Areas' stake to 34.7 per cent with an option to go to 41 per cent, and make a general offer to Western Areas' shareholders.
Ian Cockerill, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields, said:
"Gold Fields has delivered another strong performance for the first quarter of fiscal 2007, with net earnings increasing 13 per cent from R618 million to R698 million. Despite the slight drop in production revenues increased to R4.7 billion from R4.4 billion as the rand gold price received improved 10 per cent to R142,035 per kilogram.
Operating profit increased a further 6 per cent to R2.0 billion while group margins remained buoyant at 42 per cent. Cost pressures continue to remain a challenge in the current commodity cycle and we will have to be vigilant to ensure that current gold prices, as far as possible, report to the bottom line.
We continue with our focus on inward investment and optimisation of our ore bodies. We are investing R25 billion in South Africa, through the depth extension projects at Kloof and Driefontein and our bid for the South Deep asset. These investments will provide Gold Fields with a solid foundation from which to pursue our commitment to international growth."

Gruss,
Simona
Gold Fields Q1 EPS up 28 pct, misses forecasts
By Eric Onstad
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Gold Fields Ltd, the world's fourth-biggest gold producer, posted a lower-than-expected 28 percent gain in first-quarter profit on Thursday as production edged down and costs jumped.
South Africa's Gold Fields also said it had temporarily halted construction of a new mine in Peru due to an illegal blockade, but this was not expected to result in a major delay to finishing the project.
The group said earnings per share for the three months to end-September, excluding the effects of financial instruments and foreign debt, rose to 142 South African cents from a restated 111 cents the previous quarter.
The firm was expected to post a 36 percent rise in earnings to 146 cents from the previously reported 108 cents, according to the average forecast of seven analysts polled by Reuters. Their estimates were in a range of 130-187 cents.

BVN - sehr guenstig?, beste Dividende, Risiko Brasilien?
Schwaecheres Wachstum, etc.
Sicher gut fuer Goldminen?

Gold Fields, One of the World's Largest Gold Producers, Lists on the Dubai International Financial Exchange Today
JOHANNESBURG and DUBAI, October 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gold Fields Limited (Nachrichten) (Gold Fields), one of the world's largest gold producers, today listed on the Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX). Gold Fields is the first African, South African and gold mining company to list on this exchange.
Ian Cockerill, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields, commented: "I am delighted that Gold Fields is again leading South African companies into a new terrain that we believe will yield many positive returns in the future. Gold Fields is confident that its listing on the DIFX will create many more opportunities for both institutions as mutually beneficial relationships develop. The DIFX is the gateway to a significant pool of liquidity in the Gulf, Middle East and Central Asian region."
The South African Minister of Minerals and Energy, Buyelwa Sonjica expressed her approval by saying: "Gold Fields is one of South Africa's leading companies and also one of our proudest exports. The listing in Dubai supports our government's initiatives to build solid cross-border interactions and encourage capital inflows into our beautiful country. I therefore wish Gold Fields well in this venture and believe that it will add value to the economy of Dubai."
Per E. Larsson, Chief Executive Officer of the DIFX, remarked: "The listing of Gold Fields demonstrates the attraction of the DIFX to major international companies. As the only international exchange between Western Europe and East Asia, the DIFX provides a natural link for investors in the region to access Gold Fields shares. The DIFX region has long been known for its fascination with gold, with Dubai alone importing one eighth of the world's total supply in 2005."
Nasser Al Shaali, Chief Operating Officer of the DIFX, said: "Gold Fields joins firms with roots in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India, Germany, Switzerland and elsewhere that have listed securities on the exchange. We are preparing for further significant listings."
The Managing Director of the World Gold Council, Moaz Barakat, also sanctioned the listing by remarking: "Dubai, is the City of Gold, with more than 520 tons imported in 2005, it has highest gold consumption per capita in the world and it is a hub for the gold and jewellery trade in the Middle East and Indian subcontinent. I am very pleased with this listing on the DIFX as it allows the individual and institutional investors in this capital-rich region the opportunity to diversify their portfolios in gold-based financial instruments."
At the close of business on Thursday, 26 October 2006 Gold Fields' primary listing on the JSE had a market capitalisation of US$9 billion (based on the JSE closing price of US$17.51 per ordinary share. Gold Fields is also listed on the NYSE, LSE, Euronext and Swiss Exchanges, making DIFX its fifth secondary listing.
Since its formation in 1998, Gold Fields has grown into one of the world's largest unhedged gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.1 million ounces, proven and probable reserves of about 65 million ounces and resources of almost 179 million ounces (see https://www.goldfields.co.za/). Gold Fields operations span across four continents with producing mines in South Africa, Ghana, Venezuela, Peru and Australia; and developing projects in Burkina Faso and Finland. Globally, the company employs almost 50 000 people.

Also bessere Alternativen suchen, heisst hier die Devise!

South African Government Approves All Gold Fields' Mining Licenses
JOHANNESBURG, November 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gold Fields Limited (Nachrichten) (Gold Fields) (NYSE: GFI; JSE: GFI; DIFX: GFI) is pleased to announce that the South African Department of Minerals and Energy has formally approved the conversion of the company's old-order mining licenses into new order licenses. This applies to all three of the Company's operating mines in South Africa: the Driefontein, Kloof and Beatrix gold mines.
Ian Cockerill, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields, said: "The conversion of our mining licenses is a significant milestone for Gold Fields and is a reflection of our commitment to South Africa and, in particular, to the transformation of our company and industry. I thank all of our stakeholders who have assisted us in this process, for their hard work and for sharing our vision for the future."
"Now that we have secured our South African mining licenses for the life of our mines, we can concentrate on growing and developing our company to the benefit of all of our stakeholders. To this end we recently announced additional new capital investments of more than R25 billion into South Africa, which will ensure that we remain the premier gold producer in South Africa for at least the next 30 years," added Cockerill.
In order to convert old order mining licenses into new order licenses, companies must meet the requirements of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) 28 of 2002, which was enacted in May 2004, as well as the Broad Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry and the associated Scorecard for the Mining Industry.
The South African Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica, said: "The Government of South Africa welcomes the bold step taken by Gold Fields with regards the conversion of their mining licences. This conversion was made possible by the company's response to the requirements of the MPRDA. The step taken by Gold Fields also shows their commitment to government's transformation agenda, and the push for a better life for all the people of this country. Their compliance with the requirements of the Social and Labour Plan will ensure benefit for all, and we believe that there will be spin-offs that will further ensure satisfaction on all fronts.
"It is my belief that, as more companies apply for and receive approval for the conversion of their old order licences, they will be encouraged to apply for new mining licences, which licences will lead to new investments. These new investments will be a critical factor in the creation of new jobs which will further enhance the lives of the people of South Africa," said Minister Sonjica.
Gold Fields is one of the world's largest unhedged gold producers, with annual gold production of approximately 4.1 million ounces from mines in South Africa, Ghana, Australia and Venezuela, as well as a developing mine at Cerro Corona in Peru. The Company has ore reserves of 65 million ounces and mineral resources of 179 million ounces. Gold Fields has its primary listing on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange and secondary listings on the NYSE, LSE, Euronext in Paris and Brussels, and on the Swiss Exchange. All of Gold Fields' operations are ISO 14001 certified.
